Pragmatic Optimism: Debbie Boiselle – Citizens Wealth Management Group
In a recent presentation, Debbie Boiselle VP Investments at Citizens National Bank, provided insights into key economic trends, highlighting both opportunities and challenges. The presentation covered business investment, consumer spending, financial markets, and global influences shaping the economy in the coming year.
Spending and Growth
“After years of holding back, businesses are expected to increase their spending on capital projects, which could drive economic growth,” states Boisselle. Research and development (R&D) is also expected to make up more of the economy, as companies continue to prioritize innovation.
On the consumer side, spending is being fueled by individuals aged 35 to 54, particularly Millennials, who are entering their peak earning years. Their focus? “Experiences,” exclaims Boiselle, “with travel being a key driver.” Airlines are already seeing a boost from this trend. Upper-income households are providing the biggest support in this growth with the top two quintiles accounting for the majority of this growth.
Stocks and Bonds
The stock market appears to be in its third year of a bull run, with rising prices across many industries. Boisselle comments, “The tech sector is especially competitive, with China’s Deepseek AI making moves to develop advanced AI chips. This could push U.S. companies like Nvidia to innovate further to stay ahead.”
That said, some experts warn of “irrational exuberance”—a tendency for investors to take excessive risks, sometimes influenced by political shifts.
Meanwhile, in the bond market, over $6 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities are set to mature in 2025, which could impact borrowing costs and interest rates.
Geopolitics, Commodities, and Currency
Despite global tensions, the S&P 500 continues to show resilience. Commodities may be positioned for a price surge, while the U.S. dollar remains strong as the world’s leading currency.
Looking Ahead
“Overall, the outlook remains a mix of caution and opportunity,” says Boiselle. Businesses and consumers who stay informed and adaptable will be better positioned to navigate the shifting economic landscape.
