Agriculture Update: From the Profitable Harvest of 2021 to Crop Insurance Considerations for 2022

As we look ahead to planting season, Jason Williamson of Williamson Insurance Agency, reviews the profitable harvest experienced in 2021 and some things farmers should consider as they prepare for 2022. Though not many changes were made to crop insurance this year, Jason still encourages farmers to meet with their insurance agent to be sure their level of coverage matches expected rising input costs and any extra acreage they may be taking on this year to mitigate risk. He also stresses the importance of consulting with your banker to discuss the best use of excess funds, whether that being paying down debt or purchasing equipment, as well as any plans for expanding the farm operation in 2022. Citizens National Bank offers lines of credit to maximize your cash flow, as well as many types of farm loans for purchasing real estate, equipment or making improvements. He also emphasized that it’s more important than ever to keep accurate record of separate farms. “This new farm bill is more evolutionary than revolutionary,” states Williamson. Pointing to the fact that much of the 2018 farm bill simply supports the major changes that were initially made in the 2014 farm bill.
